  • Mike Scioscia said Vargas “won’t have the 100-110 pitches that he had when he was fully ready to go a couple of months ago,” but added that there’s “no reason he shouldn’t be able to get to the 80- to 85-pitch mark.”
  • Tommy Hanson, optioned after Monday’s game, will make his first start for Triple-A on Friday, which lines him up on the same schedule with Jerome Williams. If nothing else, it makes it easier to sub the two if they decide to make a change.
  • Peter Bourjos wasn’t activated today, after going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Salt Lake on Monday night. “He’s definitely within a number of days,” Scioscia said, but he still needs to get more timing. Looks like the soonest he’ll join the Angels is in SoCal this weekend.
  • Howie Kendrick hit in the cage and did some agility drills today. The Angels are hopeful that he’ll be ready when his DL stint is up (Aug. 21).
