Josh: If they don’t think I care, they’re mistaken

Josh HamiltonJosh Hamilton made eight outs in five plate appearances on Tuesday, dropping his batting average to .213, and was showered by boos from his home fans. They were loud, too. Louder than when he was a visiting Rangers player, and louder than at any point during this nightmarish season – and he’s been booed a lot this season.

Asked about it Wednesday, prior to a game in which he was dropped from second to seventh in the batting order, Hamilton said: “I can’t blame them.”

But there’s a segment of the Angels fan base that doesn’t believe Hamilton cares enough – and that’s where he disagrees.

“I’m not going to break my bat or do stuff like that on the field because you have kids watching,” Hamilton said. “If they don’t think I care, then they’re mistaken, because it hurts me more than it hurts anybody not to be performing. I’ve done it for years against the Angels, and now I’m a part of the Angels and I want to do it for the Angels. I’m just going to keep doing the best I can.”

Hamilton’s best is nowhere near good enough yet. Mike Scioscia has given him four days off to clear his head. He’s moved him from fourth to fifth, from fifth to second and now, from second to seventh – a spot he hasn’t hit in since 2009. And Hamilton himself has tried reverting to the past, trying to summon the simpler approach from 2008-09 and the pregame routine from 2010.

Nothing has worked. Through his first 69 games with the Angels, Hamilton holds a .213/.269/.388 slash line, with 10 homers, 24 RBIs and a .657 OPS that ranks 113th among Major League qualifiers.

He’s been positive all year, picking out small victories within each plate appearance that he hopes can help him take steps forward.

But the longer the season goes on, the harder that becomes.

“When you’re struggling and you stay in that spot when you feel like you’ve done about anything you can to get out of it, the confidence starts to waver some,” Hamilton said. “Guys have been great, encouraging, things like that – coaching staff, everybody.”

Scioscia’s latest lineup change put Peter Bourjos back in the leadoff spot and dropped Mike Trout to second, where the Angels’ skipper prefers he hit. It came on a day an opposing lefty – Joe Saunders – was on the mound, but it sounds like Hamilton will also bat seventh against righties.

“I think it’s going to be good for him to not worry about hitting in the middle of the lineup – just go down there and play baseball for a little bit and find his stroke,” Scioscia said.

“There’s no doubt that there are confidence issues with every player, there’s always frustration that every player feels, and it’s very clear right now, that as this season has progressed, and it’s taken more and more time for Josh to get comfortable in the batter’s box, that we need to do something to alleviate a little pressure.”

Hamilton provided some positive signs on Monday, going 2-for-5 with a long two-run homer. But there have been a lot of those days, almost all of which have been followed up by another bad performance. The latest was three groundball double plays and two strikeouts.

One step forward, two steps back.

“That’s the baffling part,” Hamilton said. “In the past, it’s either clicked at some point or you get a couple bloop hits and you kind of start moving in that direction. It goes back to the biggest thing, which is just being confident. And it’s tough to do when you’re not being successful.”

WHAT??? Booing him??? Is LA not a Baseball Town??? Where are your smart glib remarks now Josh?

Don’t forget all the LAA fans who called the TEX fans ungrateful jerks for booing Josh since he “carried the team to 2 world series”! SMH

What?!?! The self-righteous LAA fans who called us “classless” for booing JH because he quit on the team are now booing him because he’s quit on them? Good luck with that underachiever/excuse machine for the next 4 1/2 years. Hahahahaha.

Josh Hamilton is so done. Why, O’H Why does it feel so good to see this bum flounder ?
The contempt that I feel for you
I simply cannot hide
So i wish you only failure
With loads of love and pride
Even if I don’t tell you, this means the world to me
You have to know, its everthing
A Rangers fan would love to see.

Hamilton is just not quite right in the head. He never seems to say the the right thing no matter his performance. His true character and that of his wife became abundantly evident after he signed with the halos and both thumbing their noses at the only team to provide any real support for him, rangers. Hamilton expects fans to cheer for him even after poor performance because in his mind his efforts are just as important as the results. He expects us to believe he really gives a chit as we watch him smile his way back to the bench. His career as a slugging superstar ended just about 10 months ago. He may platoon well but there isn’t any credible evidence he can produce on a daily basis and it goes to his character and not just his demons. Our other overpaid star showed the same lack of character when he turned his back on the cardinals for money. Performance has nothing to do with money but in many cases a lack of does.

He’s smiling cuz he just made $60,000!

Hamiltons issues are clearly Character based without a doubt, you have to examine his history to discover what actually drives him,

notice what happened to his career the first time Hamilton was exposed to money. He was the first overall selection in the 2000 or 2001 Draft,he (1) receives a huge signing bonus, (2) sees his BEHAVIOR, then his PERFORMANCE begin to suffer, that time to point that he lost not only his career, but very nearly his life as a result. I believe that Hamilton is once again in the same Charactor based sinkhole, and it all has to do with the presence of money. Did you ever wonder why his wife never trusted him with more than $10 at a time, because his decision making skills suffer greatly the more money he has access to, I applaud Hamilton for beating Crack Cocaine, but let’s understand that the underlying issues that led to his problems of the past STILL exist and are triggered by the one thing that he cares the mo$t about,MONEY , this guy cares only about $$$$$$$$, Baseball is nothing more than his way of obtaining it, and now that his paydays are now a locked in for the next 5 years, your have just removed any reason for him to really give two shakes about the game.
The Part that should leave Angels fans scratching their heads is, How did Arte and Jerry not see this coming, particularly after having the benefit of witnessing the shameful way he carried himself with his last employer. They should have recognized this pattern of behavior before hand and said, if this guy is acting this way before getting a new contract, how will his behavior and performance be After getting a new deal.
So does Hamilton really cares about the game ?
Not nearly as much as his current and former teamates do,nor nearly as much as HE should. Hamilton still views life like a recovering addict , he feels that every day he lives without putting a crack pipe in his mouth qualifies as being a successful day, But angels fans are expecting MUCH more from his, however since he is still in recovery ( within his mind ) he is not prepared to deliver on those expectations given that and the character issues that cloud over his life..
This is ALL on Arte Moreno and Jerry Dipoto, they should have seen this coming.

Well said and true!!!

I agree with every one of you, especially Samster.

To see it coming requires the expected level of due diligence prior to offering huge sums of money to young men with the only motive being able to say later I stole him from my biggest rival under their noses. This is sports today and not just pro. Stanford gauges a successful season as how many scholarship athletes graduate. Schools like LSU consider success to be able to finish the season with greater than 50% of the signees not in jail. It is all about winning for pretty much the same reasons. Just in the angels case the only win was a personal victory for the owner and certainly not the fans or the team.
