Question of the Day, 8/15 …

Who replaces Dan Haren and Ervin Santana in the rotation next year, or might they still be retained? What if Zack Greinke doesn’t re-sign? — @bshah79

Peering into my imaginary crystal ball here … I have to think Santana is very unlikely to return next year and that there’s still a chance Haren does, but that’s just an educated guess. They already have three for 2013, in Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson and Garrett Richards, and they would like to resign Greinke. I can see them trying to restructure Haren’s deal, turning his expensive club option into more years at less AAV. But, again, just an educated guess. The rest of this season, and Greinke’s willingness to stay in Anaheim, will play a big factor.

I would like to see them bring all 5 back. I know Haren and Santana have been shaky this season, but I have to believe it is an anomaly. If the Angels came into next season with Weaver, Greinke, Wilson, Haren, Santana as their starting 5 with Richards (who could probably use 1 more year in minors) and Williams as the backups, I think they would be good.
If I were DiPoto, I would call Weaver into my office right now and ask him, how much can I offer Greinke, that wouldn’t insult you for taking a team friendly contract.
