Question of the Day, 6/19 …
Who do you think will make the All-Star team on the Angels? — Scott B., Tulsa
I could easily see three: C.J. Wilson (AL-low 2.44 ERA despite a rough outing), Mike Trout (second in the AL with a .337 batting average) and Mark Trumbo (.326 batting average, 16 homers, 47 RBIs). Each of them is an interesting case, though.
Trout isn’t on the original ballot because he wasn’t in the Majors until late April, so players (or AL skipper Ron Washington) will have to select him. Trumbo is listed as a third baseman and hasn’t played that position since early May, which is why he has no chance of getting voted as a starter by the fans. But he is an easy choice to get on the roster somehow (perhaps even the Home Run Derby?). Wilson is a shoo-in. But if we get to late June, and Wilson has the best numbers of any pitcher in the AL, would his former skipper actually pick him to start? Interesting.
I also wouldn’t rule out Albert Pujols for the All-Star team as a reserve. His numbers aren’t Pujols-like — not even close — but he has that much respect from his peers.
… Oh, almost forgot about Jered Weaver (6-1, 2.61 ERA). He should be there if he keeps it rolling when activated off the DL.
