Do results matter in the 5th-starter race?
OK, I’ll just answer that right away: Probably not. It’s about whose stuff looks good coming out of the chute, who’s most capable of translating that stuff to the big leagues and, perhaps most important in this case (and as I answered yesterday), how the Angels can maintain starting-pitching depth in their organization.
Regardless, Jerome Williams and Garrett Richards each had their final starts before the Angels will need a fifth starter on Tuesday …
- Jerome: 2 R, 6 H, 0 BB, 4 SO, 6 IP for Class A Inland Empire.
- Garrett: 1 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 SO, 6 1/3 IP for Triple-A Salt Lake.
Williams later tweeted that he’s en route to Minnesota to join the team, which may not mean much considering he has a big league contract and was also with the club when he wasn’t pitching in the Minors this weekend. Still, my assumption continues to be that it’s Williams making that start at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. He’s out of options and has proven he’s healthy. That should be enough.
